MINISTER REMOVES INCOMING ALBERTA HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CHIEF

(Edmonton - September 16, 2022)  We are thankful that Minister Tyler Shandro has decided to remove Mr. Collin May as the next Alberta Human Rights Commission Chief.    Minister Shandro’s swift and decisive move answers the call of dozens of Muslim community groups and leaders across Alberta.    Mr. May’s statements in a 2009 book review recycled old stereotypes of Islam as innately militaristic and incapable of peaceful coexistence. After Mr. May stated that he wished to engage members of the Muslim community, multiple Muslim community leaders then ...

(Edmonton - September 13th, 2022)  Yesterday Alberta's Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Tyler Shandro made the right decision in asking Mr. Collin May to resign as the incoming Chief of the Alberta Human Rights Commission.  While we would have preferred that this situation never arose in the first place, we appreciate the ongoing dialogue with Minister Shandro’s office and his decisive decision making that led to this result after over two dozen leading Muslim organizations called yesterday for Mr. May to resign.  In a 2009 book review Mr. May cited ...

The primary suspect in his murder appeared to have ties to the neo-Nazi and Islamophobic white supremacist group O9A.   In the aftermath ...

CROWN PROSECUTION AND EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE’S INADEQUATE RESPONSE TO ISLAMOPHOBIC ATTACK RAISES SERIOUS CONCERNS

(Edmonton - July 20, 2022)  NCCM is deeply concerned about the Crown prosecution and Edmonton Police Service’s problematic response to an attack last January on a Muslim family and their vehicle outside of a mosque in the city.   On New Year's Day, a man walked up to the family's vehicle several times in a mosque parking lot, spat on the car window, hurled verbal Islamophobic abuse at the Black Muslim woman (who wears a niqab or face veil) who was driving the car, punched the car window (causing damage), threw a pot at the vehicle, threatened the family with a ...
