ONTARIO NEEDS TO PROTECT MUSLIM STUDENTS
LETTER TO MINISTER LECCE RE: RISE OF ISLAMOPHOBIC INCIDENTS IN SCHOOLS

Dear Minister Lecce, In the past few days, so many Canadian Muslims and Arabs are facing a massive backlash as a result of the horrifying incidents in the Middle East. Specifically, we have been horrified by attacks on children in our schools in Ontario. We had disgusting graffiti scrawled in a London school saying “U MUSLIMS NEED TO DIE.” This is at a time when the trial of the London Terror Attacker is still in the courts. There have been concerns around students being suspended in a Vaughan Secondary School for wearing a kaffiyah in school. We’ve had a young Muslim woman wearing hijab spat on as she was waiting at a bus stop on campus in Waterloo. We know you have done a lot to try to prevent bullying, hate, and all forms of systemic discrimination, and to try to make Muslims feel safe. We would like to see a clear standalone message that addresses the rise in hate being faced by our schools. Regards,
