NCCM RELEASES RECOMMENDATIONS AHEAD OF UPCOMING NATIONAL SUMMIT ON ISLAMOPHOBIA

(London/Quebec City/Toronto/Edmonton – July 19, 2021)

At press conferences that will be held today in London, Quebec City, Toronto and Edmonton, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is releasing 61 policy recommendations ahead of the upcoming National Summit on Islamophobia, alongside community leaders and allies.

Each of the press conference sites has a nexus to where violence has been visited upon members of the Canadian Muslim community.

The National Action Summit was called for by the London Muslim Mosque alongside hundreds of Muslim community organizations and allies in the aftermath of the Islamophobic London Terror Attack that killed four members of the Afzaal family. The summit will bring together leaders from all levels of government and members of Canadian Muslim communities.

“Over the last four years, we have lost 11 members of the Canadian Muslim community in unspeakable acts of Islamophobic and white supremacist violence. This sorrow weighs heavily on the Canadian Muslim community, alongside so many Canadians of all backgrounds. And this sorrow is what grounds every single one of the recommendations we are making at this summit. But as we make these recommendations with the hope of a better and safer future for Muslims in Canada, we know that the true measure of success at this summit will be how swiftly our elected officials act on our calls to action,” said Mustafa Farooq, CEO of NCCM.

The recommendations being released today canvas some of the most pressing issues related to violent and systemic Islamophobia in Canada including calling for: an Office of the Special Envoy on Islamophobia, funding for Canadian Muslim storytelling, reform of the Canada Revenue Agency, Criminal Code Amendments to better deal with hate crimes, anti-Islamophobia strategies in education at the provincial level, municipal anti-racism campaigns, and more.
