Media and Representation
We shape the Muslim narrative in media, amplifying our voice and ensuring that biased media doesn’t distort our truth.
WHAT'S
HAPPENING

Media Representation
The media, including both news and entertainment, plays a massive role in shaping Canadians’ attitudes about Islam and Muslims.
For instance, we saw that Alexandre Bissonnette was consuming harmful and hateful “news” sources before committing the Quebec City Mosque massacre.
NCCM is dedicated to making sure that our perspective is widely known, no matter the issue, be it Islamophobia in schools, Palestinian human rights, or the situation in Quebec. Our press releases reach thousands of journalists across the country; our team is quoted widely in all news outlets; our opinion pieces are published in Canada’s most informative platforms.
Without you leading the way, making it possible for us to speak out, those on the outside will continue to speak for the Muslim community.
Our goal is to make sure that nothing is said about us without us.
Our objective is to counter news outlets who try to make their business model driving hate towards Muslims, immigrants, Palestinians, and the marginalized. Enough is enough.
NCCM HAS SUCCESSFULLY:
- Become Canada’s leading media commentator on Muslim affairs.
- Provided dozens of opinion pieces every year in both French and English commenting on all issues affecting our community.
- Given thousands of interviews over the past decade to media outlets in an effort to shape the narrative.

June 2021 - NCCM is on the Ground in the Immediate Aftermath of the London Terror Attack
Right after the attack that took away Our London Family in June 2021, NCCM was on the ground in London, Ontario to, among many other things, express the deep anger and frustration over a lack of action on violent Islamophobia.
NCCM is at the Forefront of Shaping the Narrative on Bill 21
Our team, led by CEO Stephen Brown, has been communicating clearly through large press conferences and other means to the news media when it comes to our fight against Quebec’s Bill 21, which bans many of the province’s public employees from wearing religious symbols like the hijab at work.
NCCM is a Top Canadian Expert for Media on India and the RSS
NCCM speaks to many national media outlets every year, from local to global, that affect Muslims in Canada and beyond, like when we published a report on the anti-Muslim Indian group, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Our expertise on this issue is well-known in Canadian media and we have been able to provide vital thought leadership.
NCCM Amplifies Palestinian Voices in the Media and Speaks Out on Palestinian Human Rights
NCCM has tried to continuously amplify our community voices when it comes to speaking out about Palestinian human rights, particularly in response to the chilling effect on free speech within Canadian civil society when it comes to criticizing the mass violence in Gaza and the West Bank.
2023 - Bill C-18 Advocacy
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) testified before a Senate committee pushing for amendments to Bill C-18, also known as the Online News Act, to ensure that tech giants didn’t bail out news outlets who were built on a news model of hate and misinformation. The NCCM has also called for reasonable laws to protect civil liberties while mitigating online hate.
