Educating Canadians about Islamophobia and Human Rights
Working with schools, colleges, universities, and corporations from coast to coast to combat Islamophobia, racism, and discrimination.
WE EDUCATE CANADIANS ABOUT ISLAMOPHOBIA AND HUMAN RIGHTS BY…
- Fighting Islamophobia in Schools
Over the years, NCCM has worked to build positive resources and stop hate through education. Whether leading the way for a new anti-Islamophobia strategy at the Peel District School Board or a K-12 anti-Islamophobia approach in Manitoba, we are committed to challenging Islamophobia at a systemic level through education. - Advocating On Behalf Of Students And Parents
Unfortunately, hate-motivated bullying has become a constant feature in many schools across Canada. NCCM’s education team works with students and parents to confront these challenges, work on solutions, and build long-term change. - Providing Trainings for Schools, Colleges, Universities, Public & Private Sector Institutions
Many teachers, workers, and executives have questions about Canadian Muslims that they’re often uncomfortable to ask. Why do some people wear hijab? Why do employees pray in the middle of the day? We help facilitate conversations, provide information, and dispel myths.

Pre-Service Teachers & Continuing Education
What role does anti-racism play in shaping the teaching profession? How can educators help students engage thoughtfully with complex issues like emergency powers, DEI, and free speech? Where do we set the boundaries on religious freedoms? How do we navigate the tension between free speech and hate speech in the classroom? Avoiding these discussions sends one message—opening them sends another. How do we create a space where debate is both meaningful and respectful?
A Teachable Moment on Islamophobia
This workshop explores how Islamophobia may be impacting our schools and classrooms. It begins with an overview of Islamophobia and common myths about Islam and Muslims, then examines how Muslim children are impacted by negative public discourses about their faith. Case studies and recommendations for practice will be explored.
Exploring the Intersection: Understanding Anti-Black Islamophobia
In this workshop we’ll explore the interlocking impact of Anti-Blackness and Islamophobia on Black Muslim Communities and Black Muslim Students. Practical resources and recommendations will be shared to support efforts to promote anti-racism and inclusion.
Healing Centered Anti-Islamophobia Practice
Sadly, far too many schools, corporations, and universities have to confront Islamophobia in their place of learning and work. This workshop will explore rebuilding trust together after challenging moments.
Storytelling: Reclaiming Your Narrative
This interactive workshop will use storytelling, creative writing, and mixed media, to critically deconstruct existing narratives/myths about Muslims and examine how to engage and tell stories from an anti-racist and anti-Islamophobia lens. We will explore strategies for effective allyship and engagement with Muslims communities.
Say Salaam: Islamophobia and Bystander Intervention
This workshop explores how Islamophobia may be impacting youth on an individual level and works with students to identify the different ways they can intervene when they see Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination taking place in their school or community.
Parents and Families: Exploring tools to Disrupt Islamophobia
This workshop will provide families with an understanding of Islamophobia, advocacy and practical strategies to confront Islamophobia within our schools and community.
When an act of hate struck the Kawartha District School Board (KDSB) with the vandalism of a Qur’an, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) Education Team stepped in to provide meaningful support. Rather than allowing this incident to create division, we worked closely with KDSB educators, administrators, and students to foster understanding, resilience, and a commitment to inclusive learning spaces.
A Proactive and Educational Response
Our approach to this incident wasn’t just about responding—it was about transforming a moment of harm into an opportunity for education and empowerment. Here’s how we worked with KDSB to create lasting impact:
– Immediate Support & Consultation – NCCM engaged directly with KDSB leadership to provide guidance on addressing Islamophobia in meaningful and constructive ways. We offered insights on how to communicate with students, staff, and the broader community with sensitivity and purpose – and how to ensure that there was accountability.
– Tailored Anti-Islamophobia Training – Our Education Team conducted customized professional development workshops for KDSB educators and administrators. These sessions equipped staff with the tools to recognize, address, and prevent Islamophobia while fostering inclusive classrooms.
– Student-Focused Engagement and Training – We facilitated a series of townhalls to centre the voices of students. We also provided training for all postsecondary students across the District. Through storytelling, case studies, and real-world examples, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of religious inclusion.
– Policy & Curriculum Recommendations – Beyond immediate support,we provided recommendations on curriculum improvements, inclusive policy development, and strategies to prevent future incidents of hate.
Why This Matters
This case is just one example of how NCCM’s Education Team is leading the way in tackling hate through education. Our work ensures that when moments of discrimination arise, they become catalysts for learning, growth, and systemic change. By working with schools across Canada, we are equipping educators and students with the knowledge and tools to build safer, more inclusive environments for all.
