Dear Dominic LeBlanc, Pam Damoff, and all Public Safety Critics I would like to thank you for your long commitment towards working with the Muslim community on issues of Islamophobia and hate. I also want to commend you for working so hard on Bill C-20—Canada’s first piece of legislation to provide robust oversight for the Canada Border Security Agency (CBSA). It is with regard to this vital bill that I am writing to you today. Specifically, I strongly believe that Bill C-20 needs significant amendments regarding how complaints against CBSA agents are handled, for the resulting oversight regime to be truly effective and accountable. I would like to bring these much-needed amendments to your attention: Unless the complaint pertains to top secret matters, they should not be referred to NSIRA. To keep things as timely as possible, the complaints should go to the oversight commission. For all complaints, there needs to be a strict timeline for the matter to be treated. No delays, no foot-dragging. There needs to be a zero-tolerance provision against all forms of discrimination by CBSA agents, no exceptions. Canada desperately needs a regime at our borders that hold CBSA agents truly accountable. We hope that you will continue to push for these important systemic changes. Thank you,
