Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Ng, and Minister Joly I want to thank you for representing Canada and our commitments to open trade and human rights on the world stage. As the G20 Summit continues to unfold in India this year, I want to talk to you about these commitments in light of India’s ongoing persecution of its religious minorities. As you know, no credible observer today denies that Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Dalit, and many other minority groups, are suffering active persecution under India’s current Bharatiya Janata Party administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I was happy to see you raise these significant concerns during the latest G20 meetings. Your stance was an important and principled one to take. Now we must turn words into active opposition against the BJP’s often overt condoning of mob violence, home demolitions, and ongoing oppression of vulnerable minority groups. It is time that we honour the correct balance between open trade with India and opposition to its worsening actions against marginalized minority groups. We cannot sacrifice human rights and the well-being of entire vulnerable communities for short-term gains. We must not turn a blind eye and fail to live up to our international commitments to human rights. Any long-term bilateral trade commitment with India must firstly prioritize a stance that opposes the BJP’s dismal treatment of India’s array of minority groups. I hope that you will help push for this important balance to be struck during future bilateral meetings and talks with India. Sincerely,
Consent
