ACTION ALERT: Tell the Ontario College of Teachers that Mr. Bonello should not be allowed to return to school

ACTION ALERT: TAKE ACTION NOW!

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is greatly disappointed after the Ontario College of Teachers made the decision to only suspend Martin Gaeton Bonello, a construction technology teacher in the Peel District School Board, for a period of six months after making racist remarks towards a student.

“The fact that Mr. Bonello was only suspended for six months sends the wrong message”, says NCCM’s Executive Director Mustafa Farooq, “The reality is that Mr. Bonello’s remarks devastated the student. The student stated that he reported feeling like an ‘invisible person sitting in class’. The fact that a teacher can racially abuse a student, and only face a slap on the wrist, is an insult to the notion of safe and inclusive classrooms”.

Discipline records show the incident occurred at a school in the Peel District School Board just west of Toronto four years ago where Bonello was a construction technology teacher. According to an agreed statement of facts, the teacher told the student, who cannot be identified, in front of others in the classroom: “I don’t want you to blow up my class. No Afghanis in here!”
Given that the College has revoked teaching licenses before based on sexist and racist remarks, NCCM is disappointed with the decision made in this case.

We are asking everyone to call the Ontario College of Teachers and tell them that a teacher who tells Muslim kids that they look like they will blow up a classroom have no business in teaching.
