NCCM: Canadian Muslims congratulate Liberal Party on election victory

Says Canadians “expect decisive steps to protect civil liberties, promote social cohesion”

(Ottawa – October 20, 2015) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a prominent civil liberties & advocacy organization, today congratulates the Liberal Party of Canada and its leader Justin Trudeau on their historic victory in Canada’s 42nd general election.

“We commend the Liberal Party of Canada and Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau on their election victory and for running a campaign based on inclusiveness and on promoting the strength of a diverse Canada,” says Kashif A. Ahmed, NCCM’s Board Chair.

“The election of a Liberal majority government comes with heavy responsibility,” adds NCCM’s Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee. “Canada witnessed the highest turnout of voters in decades and Canadians are now more engaged about the issues that impact them. In the coming weeks and months, Canadian Muslims and their fellow citizens will expect decisive steps from their new government to protect civil liberties, promote social cohesion and reaffirm the inclusive nature of our country.”

“This election has been difficult for Canadian Muslims,” says Amira Elghawaby, NCCM’s Communications Director. “But many are expressing hope that Canadian values of multiculturalism, cohesion, and mutual understanding have been strengthened.”

The NCCM also extends congratulations to the New Democratic Party of Canada and the Green Party of Canada for running principled campaigns and commends their leaders and representatives for standing up for the rights of all Canadians.

The NCCM remains committed to continuing to dialogue with parties from across the political spectrum, including the Conservative Party of Canada and the Bloc Québécois.

The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit grassroots advocacy organization. It is a leading voice for Muslim civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
